India - vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and rich textures woven into every aspect of life. The air carries the scent of spices and smoke, the streets hum with energy, and history stands tall in centuries-old forts and temples. Markets overflow with handcrafted textiles and shimmering brass, while artisans preserve ancient crafts with meticulous skill. From the quiet ghats of the Narmada to the bustling bazaars of Jaipur, India is a land of contrasts - chaotic yet serene, timeworn yet ever-evolving, always inspiring.
We began our latest journey to India on Christmas Day, flying out of Los Angeles and landing in Bombay - where nearly all our trips begin. Stepping off the plane, we were immediately enveloped in the unmistakable aromas of spices and smoke, the vibrant chaos of the streets, and the striking beauty of bold colors all around.
Bombay is endlessly inspiring. We wandered the lanes of Chor Bazaar, uncovering antiques, explored the fabric-filled stalls of Mangaldas Market, and stocked up on spices at Crawford Market - many of which have found their way into our Los Angeles showroom. We love the city's walkability, its rich cultural offerings like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya and Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, and, of course, its food: Swati Snacks for Gujarati flavors and Trishna for the best seafood.
From there, we traveled to Maheshwar, a truly magical town along the Narmada River. We stayed at Ahilya Fort, a tranquil retreat with gardens and home-cooked meals right on the water. We visited the local weavers, who we have been working with to develop hand woven fabric, and took a day trip to Mandu, where centuries-old ruins tell the story of India’s layered history.
Next, we arrived in Jaipur to work with the block printers. Each lane hums with the rhythm of print shops and block carvers, a testament to the city’s deep-rooted artisanal traditions. We had the privilege of taking a miniature painting workshop with Riyaz Uddin in his home - an experience we’ll never forget. Jaipur wouldn’t be complete without visits to Albert Hall Museum, Amer Fort, Nila House, and Indian Coffee House. We stayed at 47 Jobner Bagh, where warm hospitality and home-cooked meals made it feel like our home away from home.
India continues to be a profound source of inspiration and an essential part of Studio Ford. We’re thrilled to share our upcoming collections with you and invite you to visit our Los Angeles showroom to experience them firsthand.
